After being a SAHM for a few months now I realized how important a morning routine is, not just for my son, but also for me! Now, sometimes our mornings are slow to start and tend to run until about almost 11:oo am, but once I have everything completed our day tends to run more smoothly. Don’t get me wrong, I have days where these routines are set aside and I never get to them. The great thing though, there is always tomorrow to start fresh. This week’s challenge is to have in place some type of daily habit that sets you up for “success”. So follow along as I take you through my morning and the simple routines I have set in place as a mom. Good Morning, Time to Start a New Day
I hear the sound of my “baby alarm” going off (any time between 5:30-6:30 in the morning!) He’s an early riser, and is ready to being our day. I feed him and then we head out to the living room for play time. This mama then drags her tired self to the coffee maker, time to start the day…
Before I even think about my routine I need at least 1 cup of coffee to get started. (many days this coffee is reheated, any one else have this problem?) Remember it’s okay as a mom to give yourself some time to actually WAKE UP. After Johnny eats he watches Baby Einstein and plays with his toys on the floor, all while I drink my coffee and interact with him, along with checking in on the social media world (which is OKAY to do as a mom). Around 8:00 am Johnny is ready for some breakfast (solid food), and so am I. After that I get him ready for the day (change him, wipe his face, and brush his hair. Then he plays for a little more, and finally takes a morning nap (each day is different with the time and there are days where he may skip his morning nap!AHHH!). Now, it’s time for this mama to start her “mom” morning routine!
Yes, Moms Take Showers Too
I know, it’s hard to believe, but we truly do! With everything going on in a mom’s life, a shower can be a difficult thing to fit into the daily schedule, but for me it is an absolute MUST! After Johnny takes a nap I give myself a few minutes to interact on social media. I NEED this down time. Then, I take a shower and get dressed from head to toe (that means shoes too). As I am getting ready I listen to music or some days I just like it silent. I also have a morning message posted and I read it everyday. It truly helps me to set my day up for success. If you don’t already, I encourage you to have some type of quote or picture to view every morning. Here is a list of 100 quotes that are great to read in the morning if you’re having a hard time finding one you like. Okay, by now if Johnny is still napping I’m able to get just a few more things completed to start the day with success.
Bed, Dishes, Sink, Diaper Bag, Curtains, & Laundry
Okay, I’m sure you’re thinking it sounds like A LOT to do, but many of the above tasks take just a couple minutes to complete. Please keep in mind there is no need for perfection when completing a routine. Especially when making the bed. Okay, I’ll let you in on a little secret…most of the time I take the comforter and just make it so that it “looks made” I don’t even mess with the sheets. (are you nodding too? ) After I make the bed I open all the curtains and blinds. I like having the natural light shining in the house. I then venture over to the kitchen where I unload and load the dishwasher. Then I quickly shine the sink (really just wiping it, the word “shining” sounds so much more productive).
I save these next two items for last because they’re easier to do with Johnny if he wakes up early from his nap. I get Johnny’s diaper bag ready (new bottle, sippee cup, burp rag, and snacks) and finally I put a load of laundry in the washing machine. That’s it! If I were to give you a time of how long my “mom” morning routine takes, I would say with a shower and everything else, about 1 hour. (my getting ready time takes about 20-30 minutes, if I’m not distracted by my phone).
One of my biggest distractions in getting my “mom” morning routine done, I’m sure you won’t be surprised…MY PHONE! With social media, texts, and just surfing the web it’s just TOO FUN to put down. I have come to the conclusion that I may need to turn my ringer on “silent” until I get my things done. I’m not saying I have to deprive myself of my phone, but I need to discipline myself to just get my tasks done before I play on my phone. BUT somedays I feel as though it’s more important to just relax and be distracted. Days like this happen, but like I said before, tomorrow is a fresh start. So, don’t worry just focus on what you as a mom need to get accomplished so when your baby wakes up you feel ready for success, or you are somewhat rejuvinated. (everyone says to nap when the baby is napping, but honestly it’s probably harder to fall asleep then it is to just stay awake and get through the tiredness, as least for me.)
With that said, my challenge for you this week is to set up a daily habit that leads your day into success. Remember start small, and then you can add on. Maybe it’s just reading a short quote for the day, or opening your curtains, OR just being able to take a shower everyday. The choice is yours! I know you’ll succeed and it will truly make the start of your day more powerful and charged with a hopeful day of success. (but remember LIFE does happen, thank goodness we get a do over the next day…) Enjoy!
