Life Challenges, Motherhood

Let’s Build a Community of Readers! #momsteachtoo

love reading aloud to children! I know I have said this before, but when I was a teacher this was my favorite part of teaching! The interaction between the book, child, and you! It’s such a special moment, and you never know where the conversation will lead! Watch these two videos first before I go into this weeks challenge for you! There will also be some great resources towards the end that I will share with you!

Reading is an adventure! Calagary Reads is a great resource to help ignite interactions with reading. Click this link to explore the resource for families. Even after having background as a teacher I find this to be a very valuable resource.

Reading seems like it should be such a natural thing, but actually you have to teach your child how to develop a love with books & reading! We all know life gets busy, but even if it’s just for a few minutes reading to a child everyday, guess what?! That counts!  “Some reading each day is better then not reading at all.”Building an engagement for reading is huge!

Johnny and I try to read everyday! During our nightly routine I read the “Good Night Book” I can tell as he is getting older that he is developing a joy for reading! He gets a big smile on his face when I pull out the book his eyes just light up! We try to go over to story time at the library every Tuesday where we participate in songs and a librarian reads to us. We then make our way over to the children’s section to read more books. Just these past 2 weeks I have had Johnny find a book he wants to read. I know he is only 8 months old and much of it is just playing, but it’s fun to see which books he pulls off the shelf.  In my mind I’m taking it as he wants me to read those books to him.  I feel as though books help for Johnny & I to really bond.

Watch this video to see how Johnny and I enjoy reading books:

Here is a list of things Johnny & I do while reading:

  • he likes to touch the book and hold it
  • I ask lots of questions, and later on answer them
  • Johnny sometimes sits in the big rocking chair, he loves it!
  • we play with our puppet”Ralphie the Raccoon”, Johnny loves that too!
  • we sing songs afterwards

I’m sure they have handouts and suggestions. I would have never known about some of these songs if it wasn’t for the library’s help!

“You know what the best thing about reading aloud to children is? You get to be a kid yourself. Remember to Be Silly & Have Fun!”

Are you ready for this week’s challenge?!

This week’s challenge is…you guessed it, read to a child everyday! If you don’t have children or they are into adulthood, there are always opportunities when you’re in public to engage in some type of reading with children. It can even be labels at the grocery store, billboards, or anything else that has words! Don’t stop there! Make sure to have a brief conversation about those words or books that you read. Maybe you can keep a small book on hand just in case! (when you’re in line at a checkout lane, that’s a great opportunity) Also, remember children are never too young for you to read to them. Reading doesn’t have to be a chore or a timed activity, just as long as everyone is engaged and having fun. So let’s start building that community of readers!

Ready, Set, Go!

I always love hearing from people, so feel free to share your insights in the comments below! You can also share this post with anyone else and follow me on my facebook page,  as well as instagram. Thank you so much for taking the time to read!
