Turning that House Chore You Despise into a Habit

I absolutely HATE (my mom always said hate is a strong word, but I really think it’s appropriate in this situation!) LAUNDRY! I mean the whole process is just daunting and I can’t seem to get over this hatred feeling towards it. Laundry is a love/hate relationship. I love the smell of fresh laundry and the feeling of having fresh clothes put away, but COME ON! The process is outrageous…sorting, then putting it in the washer, then drying, then folding, and FINALLY putting them away.

So here is the thing that I learned, LAUNDRY is not going to go away, sigh…

I have to be honest…something that I really don’t like doing I tend to put it aside until it is just overwhelming and absolutely needs to be done, anyone else with me on this one? Like my current situation… (picture below)

From this point of view it doesn’t look too bad… 🙂

“So I decided something needs to be done, I need to take charge.”

I have come to the conclusion that I need to figure out a way to conquer my “fear” of Laundry. I found this wonderful sight called FlyLady. (umm…excuse me…where were you at the start of my adult life!? #adulting)  This fabulous lady helps to coach you into turning your house chores into habits. Guess what habit of the month she is focusing on in August?…LAUNDRY! (I think it’s a sign that I have to get my act in gear with this whole laundry business.) Visit the link to learn more about turning laundry into a habit.

Here is my “take away” from reading her tips:

  • do a small load of laundry everyday (yeah…I’m the one who waits until the basket gets overfull)
  • don’t start washing another load until the previous load is folded and put away (that’s a hard one for me…BUT I can do it!)

FlyLady’s Mottos

FlyLady is a great website for any chore! It helps to hold you accountable for getting them done.  I have a very laid back husband, so he’s not very helpful with keeping me on top of the chores. (don’t tell him that though…)

Let’s face it house chores tend to sneak up on us and then creates a chaotic household. It doesn’t matter if you’re a working mom or a stay at home mom, house chores can be difficult because we tend to see other things as more of a priority (or plain and simple, we just hate doing them so then AVOIDANCE happens). Flylady does a great job with taking you through baby steps to tackling chores. She divides your house into different zones and helps to give you tools and steps so that you have more of an enjoyable and peaceful home. The best thing is there’s an app that you can download and these tips are FREE.

Final thoughts to you…

Give yourself a small goal you want to work towards and once you turned it into a habit (science proven, a habit takes 21 days or more to form, you can read this article to learn more about the formation of habits) give yourself a treat, you deserve it! Okay…I’m so motivated…how about you?

Here’s how you can get connected with FlyLady
